Community Rules

What is not allowed on Athlema, how to report or block someone, and what happens when content breaks the rules.

On this page

Last updated:

These Community Rules are part of Athlema's Terms of Service. By using Athlema, you agree to follow them.

There is no tolerance for objectionable content or abusive users on Athlema.

The short version

Athlema is for playing sport together. Treat people with respect. If you see something that breaks these rules, report it. We review every report within 24 hours and remove content that breaks the rules. People who break the rules can lose their account.

Where these rules apply

These rules cover everything people write or upload on Athlema:

  • Player Cards: your photos, your name and your bio.
  • Teams: team names and team photos.
  • Pickup games you host: the title, the description and the photos.
  • Team chat: every message.

They also cover how you behave toward other people you meet through Athlema, including at games and events.

What is not allowed

Do not post, send or do any of the following:

  • Harassment and bullying. Do not target, insult, shame or keep contacting someone who does not want to hear from you.
  • Threats and violence. Do not threaten anyone, encourage violence, or celebrate it. This includes threats made "as a joke".
  • Hate. No slurs, hate speech, or attacks on people for who they are, such as their race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability or age.
  • Sexual content. No sexually explicit words or images. No sexual comments or advances toward people who have not welcomed them.
  • Intimate images shared without consent. Never post or share nude or sexual images of a person without their consent. This includes images that are fake or altered to look real.
  • Illegal content. Nothing that is illegal, or that promotes or helps illegal activity, such as selling drugs or weapons.
  • Sharing other people's private information. Do not post someone's home address, phone number, email, financial details, ID documents or similar information without their permission. Do not post private messages to embarrass or target someone.
  • Impersonation. Do not pretend to be another person, a team, an organizer or Athlema. Do not use a name or photo that misleads people about who you are.
  • Cheating and fraud. Do not fix or fake games, enter false scores or results, play under someone else's name, or manipulate ratings, rankings or draws. Do not run scams, misuse someone else's payment card, or abuse refunds, discount codes or credit.
  • Betting and wagering. Do not use Athlema to arrange or promote betting, wagering or gambling on any game, result or player.
  • Spam. No spam, scams, chain messages or unwanted advertising.
  • Anything else that is offensive or inappropriate for a sports community.

Swearing

Ordinary swearing is allowed. Slurs, hate terms and sexually explicit terms are not, and we remove them when they are reported or we find them.

Minors

  • You must be 18 or older to have an Athlema account. Do not create an account for someone under 18.
  • Where an organizer allows it, a parent or legal guardian may register a player aged 13 to 17 for a program from the parent's or guardian's own account (see Section 2.2 of the Terms of Service). No one under 13 may take part.
  • No sexual content of any kind involving anyone under 18.
  • Do not use Athlema to contact or try to meet someone you know or believe is under 18, unless you are their parent or guardian, or you are an organizer's staff member contacting them about a program for a proper reason.
  • If you think someone using Athlema is under 18, report them. We close accounts held by people under 18.

Content that harms children

We have zero tolerance for the sexual exploitation of children. This includes sexual images of children, grooming, trying to get a child to meet or send images, sexual extortion, and trafficking.

When we find it or it is reported to us, we:

  • remove it at once;
  • keep it as evidence, as the law requires;
  • report it to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), as US law requires;
  • permanently ban the accounts involved; and
  • cooperate with law enforcement.

If you think a child is in immediate danger, call 911 or your local emergency number first. You can also report directly to NCMEC at report.cybertip.org.

If an intimate image of you (or of someone you are authorized to act for) has been shared on Athlema without consent, you can ask us to remove it. Send your request to support@athlema.com with the subject "Intimate image removal", or use athlema.com/contact. Please include:

  • your name and a way to contact you;
  • where the image is on Athlema, for example the player's name or the link to the photo, so we can find it;
  • a short statement that you believe in good faith that the image was shared without consent; and
  • your signature (typing your full name is enough).

We remove the image, and any copies we know of, within 48 hours of receiving a valid request. You do not need to report it in the app first.

How to report

You can report a player or a team chat message:

  • Player: in the Athlema app, open their Player Card and tap More options › Report.
  • Team chat message: on athlema.com, open the message menu (…) and choose Report message.
  • Anything else, like a team or a pickup game: write to us at athlema.com/contact.

What a report includes

Pick a reason: Harassment, Spam, Inappropriate content or Other. When you report a Player Card in the app, you can also add a short note (up to 500 characters), and if you were looking at one of the card's photos, the report points to that photo.

We save a copy of the content when you report it, so editing or deleting it afterwards does not hide it from us.

The person you report is never told who reported them. You cannot report your own content.

What happens after you report

The Athlema team reviews every report within 24 hours, every day of the week.

When we are done, we tell you the result: either we removed the content, or it did not break these rules. We do not tell you what action we took against the other person.

What can happen when content breaks the rules

Depending on what happened, we may:

  • Remove the content: a photo, a bio, a chat message or a pickup game description.
  • Send a warning.
  • Ban someone from a team chat, or from all chat on Athlema.
  • Suspend or archive a team, or cancel a pickup game.
  • Suspend an account, or close it permanently.

We may skip steps. For serious harm, such as threats, sexual exploitation, or sharing intimate images without consent, we may close an account permanently on the first offense.

Organizers can also delete chat messages in the chats for their own programs. When they do, the author is told.

If your content is removed

We tell you what was removed and which rule it broke. If you received a warning, the notice says so.

Appeals

If you think we made a mistake, write to support@athlema.com within 30 days of our decision. Tell us what was removed or what action we took, and why you think it was wrong. Where possible, a different member of staff from the one who made the first decision reviews your appeal. We tell you the result.

How to block someone

To block a player, open their Player Card in the Athlema app and tap More options › Block. After you block someone:

  • You cannot see each other's Player Cards.
  • Neither of you can partner up with or invite the other.
  • You cannot see or join each other's pickup games.
  • You do not get chat notifications from them.

What blocking does not change

The person you block is not told. Blocking does not change anything an organizer runs: tournament entries and teams you share, rosters, draws, results and standings all stay the same.

Blocking does not send a report, and reporting does not block. You can do both.

To unblock someone, in the Athlema app go to Profile › Blocked players, or open their card and tap Unblock.

Questions, or think we got it wrong?

Write to us at athlema.com/contact. In the app, go to Profile › Help & contact.
